Global consumer goods company Unilever renovated its US Headquarters to become the most energy-efficient and intelligent office building on the East Coast. Together we created a high-tech work environment that is globally recognized for improving employee productivity and well-being.

Challenge

Employees at Unilever found the office experience impersonal and faced challenges in finding suitable workplaces for their activities. Unilever decided to go in for a major makeover. The former office was not an inspiring place to work at all. Unilever’s objective was to reduce environmental impact with intelligent use of space and energy, while keeping employees’ well-being at the center of this. This meant that the old-fashioned office had to transform into a vibrant and inspiring workplace, without fixed desks or cubicles.

Mapiq came together with its partner Edge Technologies, and renovation plans were made to create a high-tech work environment.

The Mapiq solution

Our smart office platform is the foundation of the high-tech work environment of Unilever. We connected four buildings of 32.000 m2 in total. This resulted in an interactive 3D map of the office. Our smart office platform allows employees to:

  • Easily navigate through the building and find available workplaces. This decreases the time employees spent looking for a place to work.
  • Discover the whereabouts of colleagues to find each other easily for ad-hoc meetings or social events.
  • Adjust workplaces to their personal preferences such as light and temperature to boost employee autonomy.

Next to that, 4,850 bGrid sensors and iBeacons were connected to gather data about the use of the building. All this data is visualized in the analytics dashboard. This provides real-time information about office occupancy, peak hours, and popular workspaces to Unilever’s facilities team.
